What are you afraid of?

What are you afraid of?

Whoa, I know; that got real personal real quick. And I don’t expect you to answer the question out loud to me. But it’s a powerful one to consider and answer for yourself. What fears keep you weighed down, shrunk back, and tight-lipped?

Fear is a sneaky little thing because it manifests in any number of thoughts and emotions without overtly declaring itself at the root. We often live imprisoned to fear without ever realizing it as our captor.

Fear shows itself through insecurity, fear of rejection, bitterness, and unforgiveness. It rears its ugly head through beliefs that your value is defined by your performance and that your material possessions dictate your success. It leaks out when we lash out at others, when we criticize others, when we feel threatened by someone else’s wins. Fear has many faces but it all stems from one belief - the thing I fear is a danger or threat to me.

I fear not receiving the approval of other people because I believe they dictate my value. I fear failure because I believe that will prove me inadequate and incapable. I fear forgiving someone because that will prove that my feelings don’t matter.

At its root, I fear others because I believe they hold the power to make or break my worth, value, and identity.

But my friend, it isn’t true! You have inherent value simply by being you. You don’t have to earn it, you don’t have to prove yourself for it, and you can’t lessen it. You are priceless, unique, and wonderfully designed for amazing purposes! Fear holds you back from being the YOU you were created to be. It layers on mud that encases you and taints how you see yourself, the world, and other people. It weighs you down and causes your feet to freeze, your mind to stall, and your confidence to melt away.

So I ask you to ponder again - what are you afraid of? Where in your life are you believing that you are less than, inadequate, and the sum total of other people’s opinion of you? Where do you feel the most frozen in fear and discouraged from taking a step forward?

Once you identify that area, begin to challenge the fear with the truth that you are valuable in and of yourself. That neither your success nor your failure defines you. That being loved or hated by another person does not define you. That your performance does not define you. Rather than simply hearing and living in agreement with the thoughts of fear that shove you down and keep you locked up, begin pushing back on them. Begin dismantling them. Begin stepping out of the mud pit of fear and walking in the confidence, hope, and security that you are priceless, one-of-a-kind, and filled with purpose simply by being YOU!

Do you struggle to identify areas of fear in your life? Do you feel stuck in breaking free from what holds you back? It would be my honor and pleasure to connect with you and support you through that journey! You are fearfully and wonderfully made and as you step out of fear and into the truth of your divine purpose, you will discover freedom, joy, and strength that you never thought possible!
